Staff Positions

The Metropolis of Detroit Summer Camp relies on over 125 young adults and adults each summer who serve on the staff in various positions. The various staff positions, staff recruitment and other important information can be found in the sections found below. Administrative positions are salaried. The Counselor position and Lifeguards receive a weekly stipend. Counselors-in-Training (CITs) are volunteer positions.

Camp Director – Full Summer

Salaried, preferably 6-week position. Must be a minimum of 25 years old with previous camp administrative experience and/or proven experience working with children. Responsible for overseeing the day to day operations and program of the camp, preparing the camp for State inspections, registering campers, overseeing all staff and ensuring the safety of all campers and staff. Should have a Bachelor’s Degree and proven leadership and good organizational skills. Reports to the Camp Board of Trustees.

Camp Director – Weekly

Program Directors

Salaried, 6-week position. Must be a minimum of 19 years old, completed at least 1 year of college and had previous experience in a camp setting. Responsible for planning, organizing and running the day to day activities that makes up the camp program. Must be energetic, creative, positive, and have the ability to work well with staff and campers alike. Reports to the Camp Director/Assistant Camp Director.

Orthodox Life Director

Salaried position. Must be a graduate of an Orthodox Seminary or currently enrolled in a Master’s of Divinity program. Responsible for all Orthodox Life classes, assisting the clergy with weekly liturgy, and serving as the spiritual director to support the Christian atmosphere of the camp. Reports to the Camp Director/Assistant Camp Director.

Waterfront Directors

Salaried, 6-week position. Must be a minimum of 19 years old, completed a minimum of one year of college and hold current Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and CPR Certifications. Should also have Advanced First Aid certification. Responsible for all activities at the waterfront, including swimming instruction, free-swim sessions, water and boating safety. Media Director

Salaried, 6-week position. Must be a minimum of 19 years old, completed at least 1 year of college and had previous experience in a camp setting preferred. Responsible for taking digital pictures and video of camp activities and programs throughout each day, and uploading the pictures to the camp website on a regular basis. Expertise in using digital cameras, editing and layout of digital pictures and updating websites required. Reports to the Camp Director/Assistant Camp Director.

Arts & Crafts Director

Salaried position – 6 week position. Must be a minimum of 19 years old, completed a minimum of 1 year of college, with experience in arts and crafts preferred. Responsible for planning and organizing the weekly arts & crafts projects for the 3 camper groups, and overseeing the daily morning Arts & Crafts classes. Assists with programming and counseling responsibilities as needed. Reports to the Camp Director/Assistant Camp Director.

Health Director

Salaried position – can work 1-6 weeks. Must be a minimum of 21 years old with a current RN, LPN, MD, DO or EMT license, or Advanced First Aid Certification. Responsible for the health and medical needs of all campers and staff, including dispensing prescription medication to campers, handling minor injuries and illnesses and maintaining camp health logs. Reports to the Camp Director/Assistant Camp Director.

Adult Volunteer

Week position. Must be a minimum of 25 years old. Assists with the completion of projects, repairs, camp improvements or maintenance. Provides support to the Camp Director for camp operations, including the kitchen, as required.  Reports to the Camp Director/Assistant Camp Director.

Counselor

Salaried position – up to 6 male and 6 female staff positions available each week. Must be a minimum of 18 years old (staff for Week Zero should be 20 and over). Responsible for overseeing a group of campers in all of their daily activities during the week. Attends all activities with camper group, runs various program activities with Program Directors, and is responsible for the safety and well being of their assigned campers. Reports to the Camp Director/Assistant Camp Director.

Lifeguards

Salaried position – can work 1 week, multiple weeks or all 5 weeks. Must be a minimum of 17 years old and hold current Lifeguard and CPR certification. Assists Waterfront Director with swimming instruction and is responsible for the safety of all campers and staff engaged in water or boating activities. Works as a Counselor, attends program activities and assists with cabin duty when not assigned to the waterfront.  Under the direct supervision of the Waterfront Director.  Reports to the Camp Director/Assistant Camp Director.

Cook

Salaried position – can work 1-6 weeks. Must be a minimum of 19 years old and have proven experience with preparing and serving meals to large groups. Responsible for following camp menu, and preparing 3 daily meals during the week of camp.  Reports to the Camp Director/Assistant Camp Director.

Counselor in Training

Must be 17, or 16 and going into your Senior year of high school). Works with the counselors and assists with overseeing a group of campers in all of their daily activities during the week. Assists with kitchen/dish duties, attends all activities with camper group, runs various program activities with counselors and Program Directors, and is responsible for the safety and well being of their assigned campers. Position only available for regular camp weeks – not Week Zero. Under the direct supervision of Counselors. Reports to the Camp Director/Assistant Camp Director.
